VOLUNTEER INFORMATION

Hello and welcome! We have a number of fun opportunities for volunteering with the IHS Band.  Please see below for a brief description of each role.  Please think about which role might be right for you and join the IHS Volunteer family! Volunteers get FREE admittance to the event and sit in the stands with the band. Click below for our volunteer opportunities this year

Volunteer Calendar

A background check is required for all volunteer positions

(including FISD employees) and must be renewed annually.

It is a simple process that will only take minutes. You can submit your background check on Monday, July 17th, 2023 at https://friscoisd.voly.org.  Once that is complete, the final step is to email the approval to ihsbandvolunteering@gmail.com.  Then, you are all set to volunteer for the entire school year!

Volunteer Needs for 2023

CHAPERONES

This is a great opportunity to spend time with the band and color guard students and get to know them as well as other band parents. Volunteers get FREE admittance to the event, and you get to sit with the band! Duties include:

  • Riding the bus to and from the game/event with the students.

  • Taking attendance on the bus before leaving the school and when leaving the event.

  • Passing out snacks.

  • Assisting the needs of the students during the event. We have a backpack with basic first aid needs, etc.

  • Helping on the field at halftime with plumes (which we place onto the students’ shako hats), gathering lyre music buckets, other small duties as needed.

  • Buses are scheduled to leave at 5:30pm. To support this, we have chaperones arrive at school starting at 5pm.

  • Dress code is casual. We encourage IHS shirts, but not mandatory. Pants and shorts can be anything you are comfortable wearing.

  • Contacts for chaperoning are Jennifer Savage and Elyse Volpe.

  • A group text message for each game will be used for communication to/from/during the trip.

PIT CREW

For games and competitions is an opportunity to get on the field and see the band up close during halftime and competition performances. Volunteers get FREE admittance to the event, and you get to sit with the band. Duties include:

  • Helping students load/unload band equipment, instruments, props to/from the band semi truck.

  • Helping students roll band equipment onto the field for performances (games and competitions).

  • Helping unload the semi truck at Independence High School after games and competitions.

  • Pit crew volunteers drive themselves to/from games/events.

  • Dress code is casual. We encourage IHS shirts, but not mandatory. Pants and shorts can be anything you are comfortable wearing. Close-toed shoes are required.

PRE-GAME MEAL SERVICE

  • Volunteers make sure band students are served a meal before we head out for football games. These meals will be premade and ready to hand out in the IHS cafeteria.  Duties include:

  • Helping set up the meals for easy pickup by the students in the cafeteria.

  • Checking off students’ names as they pick up their meals.

  • Making sure students pick up all components (drink, dessert, utensils, etc.) of their meals.

  • Reminding students of the time to ensure they eat and have time to get into their uniforms in time for inspection.

  • Help clean up in the cafeteria at the end of meal service.

  • For most games this happens at 4:15. Volunteers should arrive at 3:45 and checkin through the school front entrance. If there is a time change for a particular game, this will be reflected in the SignupGenius link.

CONCESSIONS

Throughout the year, the band boosters are given the opportunity to run concession stands at football games. A portion of the earnings goes to the IHS band. These are great fundraisers for the program. Duties include:

  • Basic food prep (hot dogs, nachos, fountain drinks).

  • Serving food to customers.

  • Ringing up sales.

  • Food Handler Programs

  •  Food Handlers Permit is required to volunteer in the concessions stand. Please complete food handler license and send a copy of certificate to ihsbandvolunteering@gmail.com
